Nearly anywhere you want to visit in the Florida Keys and Key West are back in business after Hurricane Irma struck this idyllic strip of islands known for its crystal blue waters, heavenly beaches and laid-back vibe. In fact, you might decide it’s better than ever. Although commercial air service resumed just 10 days after Irma, American Airlines is set to begin new summer seasonal, nonstop service June 9 between Key West and Dallas–Fort Worth international airports, making “island time” your favorite time to travel.

Undersea Treasures

All major Florida Keys attractions are open and some new ones are on the not-too-distant horizon, plus popular fishing, snorkeling and diving charters are in operation again.

In Islamorada, Theater of the Sea, one of the world’s oldest marine mammal facilities, is open with a restored beach and gift shops. All marine interaction programs are open, but its shark area is undergoing repairs. Ferry tours to the historic 5-acre Pigeon Key are operating, departing from the Hyatt Place’s marina at the Faro Blanco Lighthouse. On Pigeon Key, visitors can tour a former section gang quarters, former foreman’s dorm and historical museum.

All 10 Keys state parks are open for day use as restoration efforts continue. In Key Largo, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park in the United States, is open to beachgoers, overnight campers, hikers and snorkelers and offers four glass-bottom boats. Snorkeling tours and dive excursions operate daily, weather permitting. Powerboat rentals remain closed. Snacks and drinks are available, but the park’s cantina remains closed.

Wildlife and Nature Restored

On Big Pine Key, a new 1,840-square-foot Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Nature Center, currently under construction and will open this fall showcasing the Keys’ four national wildlife refuges. The center also is to include a “friends group” nature and book store, outdoor public restrooms and an accessible ramp. Future expansion plans are to include new indoor and outdoor exhibits and a nature trail boardwalk.

The Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower has been recently restored and enhanced. The gardens at West Martello Tower, a historic site dating back to 1864 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, were previously shaded but now are primarily sun-filled. A colorful restored butterfly garden offers a diversity of plants that attract caterpillars and butterflies including monarchs, malachite, zebra long wings and skippers. A white perfume garden filled with fragrant jasmine, gardenias, sweet almond and Chinese perfume plants offers a scenic contrast against the fort’s historic red bricks. Also newly added is a “Jurassic dinosaur” garden with sculptural cycads.

Brews and Rum

In Islamorada, Florida Keys Brewing Co. has opened a new 1,100-square-foot tap room with two brewing systems, each showcasing and dispensing 10 brews. It also has a beer garden. Celebrating its third anniversary and located at the corner of the Old Highway and Morada Way, the brewery infuses its brews with flavors from Key limes, citrus and local honey, and opened in March 2015. Draft beers include names such as Iguana Bait Honey and Hibiscus Kolsch. It also serves mead from Keys’ Meads, the Keys’ only meadery based in Key Largo, and draft kombucha.

The Key West First Legal Rum Distillery offers complimentary mojito-making classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4:30 p.m. Distillery owner Paul Menta recently sailed aboard the schooner Wolf — the flagship of the Florida Keys’ Conch Republic — to Cuba to explore secrets of an authentic mojito while visiting Havana. Private classes can be booked for five or more.

 Kayak under a Full Moon

In Islamorada, Robbie’s Marina recently welcomed Blue Catamaran, which offers two daily snorkel excursions and sunset cruises on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Built in South Florida and designed for Keys excursions, Blue features a catamaran hull providing a fast, stable platform ideal for snorkeling, two outdoor showers and full-sized restroom. Designed for groups, it can accommodate small intimate trips or groups of up to 124.

The Florida Keys Wildlife Society, a group supporting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges, now is offering two-hour Full Moon Kayak excursions. Tours traverse Big Pine’s National Key Deer Refuge, one of four wildlife refuges in the Keys and home to the endangered Key deer, found only in the Keys.

In Key West, Danger Charters is offering the “Sommelier Series — a fine wine tasting at sea,” with a weekly sailing on Tuesdays through mid-May aboard a Danger 65-foot schooner. The experience includes samplings of six wines. The series launched in February with an “Into the Heart of NAPA Wine Experience” sail with six California wines. The new sailings also include an onboard sommelier and appetizers.

New and Renewed Lodging

In Key Largo, the Florida Keys’ first all-inclusive adults-only property, Bungalows Key Largo, a 12-acre 135-unit property billing itself as “luxury inclusive,” is due to open in May. Most rooms will average about 800 square feet and include private outdoor plunge pools or tubs. The resort will offer two in-ground pools, five indoor and outdoor restaurants, four bars, 1,000 feet of shoreline, three piers to accommodate boats up to 40 feet long, a “Florida Keys chic” design and 4,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space. Rates will include lodging, food and premium beverages, hotel amenities, activities and water toys. The palm-lined bungalow resort is under development by Johnson Resort Properties Inc., owned by Jerry Johnson, who also developed Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada.

This fall, Curio Collection by Hilton is set to unveil Baker’s Cay Resort in Key Largo upon completion of a multimillion-dollar reimagination. The 13-acre, 200-room resort will offer 17,000 square feet of meeting space with executive boardrooms, outdoor sanctuaries, a grand lawn and two expansive ballrooms. Pet amenities include dog Tiki huts and cooled water bowls. A beachside tequila and taco venue is to include house-made hot sauces crafted from peppers grown on the property. The property also is to include two swimming pools with a waterfall grotto, a winding nature trail lined with hidden beaches, boat dock and Aveda salon.

In Islamorada, the Islamorada Resort Co.’s 63-unit Pelican Cove Resort is partially reopened with 42 units. Its 6-acre 54-unit La Siesta Resort & Marina also is open, although its five-bedroom house remains under renovation. Additionally, Islamorada Resort Co.’s 145-unit Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina is scheduled to reopen in phases this spring. Postcard Inn’s Ciao Hound Italian Kitchen & Bar and marina are scheduled to reopen in April.

The 27-acre, 214-unit oceanfront Cheeca Lodge Resort & Spa is to reopen March 30 for the Easter holiday weekend. Cheeca Lodge has undergone a $20 million renovation with a rebuilt 525-foot-long wooden fishing pier, redesign of its main lobby and all rooms, 4,600 square feet of meeting and function space, spa with seven treatment rooms and refurbished nine-hole golf course. A new pool and Tiki bar are to open in May.

On Duck Key in Marathon, the 60-acre Hawks Cay Resort, a AAA Four Diamond Award–rated and Preferred Hotel Group Lifestyle Collection member, will partially reopen March 16 with 100 villas and its Calm Waters Spa, Sunset Pool, Coral Cay kids’ activities center and Angler and Ale restaurant with breakfast, lunch and dinner. The main hotel, with 177 guestrooms, is scheduled to reopen this summer.
